Dark City Filmmaker Alex Proyas Is ‘Returning To His Roots’ With Sister Darkness

Alex Proyas has been MIA from the feature film scene since 2016’s “Gods of Egypt,” which fizzled at the box office despite its large scale and impressive cast, and that’s not great. Proyas has turned in masterpieces and head-scratchers over the last 30 years, but one thing is always consistent with his work: he swings for the fences. That guy is not afraid to go big, go weird, and hope that the audience follows along. All you have to do is look at his filmography and you’ll see that thread time and again. Starting with “The Crow,” his fantastic follow-up “Dark City,” “I, Robot,” and the absolutely bonkers Nicolas Cage film “Knowing,” Proyas has always prioritized the odd and unusual in … [Read More...]

Mondo’s New Rick And Morty Figure Includes Mr. Meeseeks And Mr. Poopybutthole

It has been three long years since Mondo released their first high-end set of figures based on the highly popular, absurd sci-fi comedy “Rick and Morty.” Something happened between 2019 and this year of our lord 2022, but I can’t quite remember what world-changing event took place. Whatever happened, Mondo just announced a second set of “Rick and Morty” figures that will make you smile and just might even help your golf game. The original set introduced the title characters and Series 2 brings Big Arm Morty and Mr. Meeseeks (Happy Version) to the hearts and shelves of fans everywhere. These pieces are substantial, too. Mr. Meeseeks stands 11.5 inches tall and Big Arm Morty is 8.5 inches tall. As an extra bonus, if you bought the first … [Read More...]

Lupita Nyong’o Leaves Apple TV+ Crime Series Lady In The Lake

Lupita Nyong’o has dropped out of the upcoming Apple TV+ series, “Lady in the Lake,” based on the New York Times-bestselling crime novel by Laura Lippman. Nyong’o was set to costar opposite Natalie Portman, who is also executive producing the series, which is currently in production. However, she has reportedly exited the project and the search is now underway for a new actress to serve as the co-lead.No reason was given for Nyong’o’s departure from “Lady in the Lake,” but Variety likens it to when she stepped down two years ago from another streaming adaptation of Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s “Americanh.” An HBO Max series was on the way, but the production ultimately ran into trouble due to “scheduling issues caused by … [Read More...]

The Mummy Inspired Daniel Radcliffe To Take On His The Lost City Role

Aaron and Adam Nee’s “The Lost City” recently made an unexpectedly large splash in theaters, earning over $170 million worldwide and generally pleasing critics. The film is about a romance author (Sandra Bullock) who only turned to writing archeology-themed smut when her interest and skill in genuine archeology was stymied by the death of her husband. Daniel Radcliffe plays a spoiled billionaire named Abigail Fairfax who understands that Bullock has written actual archeological clues into her novels kidnaps her to find a real-life treasure on a remote tropical island before the island’s volcano erupts. Fairfax is depicted as violent, sociopathic, impetuous, entitled, slightly mad, and actually pretty hilarious. Radcliffe has had a long and interesting career, starting out as the child star of a notable … [Read More...]

This Is Going To Hurt Trailer: Ben Whishaw Delivers Heartfelt Laughs And A Lot Of Babies

Ben Whishaw may be known for playing Q in three of the Daniel Craig “James Bond” installments, but more importantly, he is also the voice of Paddington f****** Bear, the loveliest protagonist ever put to film. In a brand new series from AMC+, Whishaw brings that wonderful energy to “This Is Going To Hurt,” a medical comedy-drama set in the gynecology and obstetrics ward of a British hospital. The series is inspired by creator Adam Kay’s memoir of the same name, exploring the hilarity, heartache, and heartwarming moments that can only take place in the “brats and twats” section of the hospital, as Whishaw’s Dr. Kay calls it.This announcement may be old news for some of our non-American readers, as “This Is Going … [Read More...]

The Atlanta Season 3 Finale Serves Up Kinky Chaos & Baguette Beatdowns

At long last, the season of “Atlanta” that was supposed to be “more about Van than Earn” ends with an episode that is all about Van, and we finally get an explanation for her strange behavior throughout the season. “Tarrare” sees our lone female lead on a chaotic adventure in Paris, working three distinct jobs: a femme domme for a certain member of the Skarsgard clan, an intimidating courier who is not above bread-based violence, and a sous-chef serving up cannibal cuisine. It goes without saying that this episode was unfiltered insanity, and weirdos who get off on reading my reviews and sending hate mail over the less favorable ones will be disappointed to know that I did not dislike this one — although it … [Read More...]

Netflix Is Expanding Its Subtitling And Audio Description Options For Disabled Viewers

In honor of Global Accessibility Awareness Day, Netflix is boosting its accessibility features, including audio descriptions (AD) and subtitles for deaf and hard of hearing (SDH) people. As someone who developed tinnitus pretty young (who knows why, but also it was probably from concerts), I live in an all subtitles all of the time state of mind, but anything Netflix can do to make their content more accessible is not only worth it, it’s vital. While you could easily argue that Netflix has dropped the ball recently with the news that they’re cracking down on password sharing, possibly implementing ads, and spending ungodly amounts of money, it’s hard to see a downside to this. The biggest changes include expanding the number of titles with ADs and SDHs … [Read More...]

New Yellowstone Spin-Off Pivots To Focus On True-Life Legendary Badass Bass Reeves

“Bass Reeves” was originally a standalone limited series that was coming to Paramount+ with Taylor Sheridan, but it’s morphed a bit. Now, according to the MTV Entertainment Studios upfront presentation (via Deadline), it’s going to be a new chapter in the “Yellowstone” prequel “1883.” It’s an interesting move and one that I think is very positive. The story of “1883” and why the Duttons settled exactly where they did had, for all intents and purposes, ended at a natural stopping place. Though there was originally chatter about a second season, Sheridan finally said the story was finished. Now it’s continuing as “1883: The Bass Reeves Story,” and this is not only going to get people familiar with a badass person from American history, but … [Read More...]

Luis Buñuel’s Belle de Jour (1967)

Belle de Jour (1967) is Luis Buñuel's most famous movie and his biggest commercial hit. It's a fascinating exercise in surrealism and eroticism and it's a movie that is perplexing and challenging, but in a good way. You think you have it all figured out then you watch it a second time and you change your mind completely. An art film that is also utterly entralling.Catherine Deneuve gives her career-best performance. You can find my full review … [Read More...]

The Sister of Ursula (1978)

The Sister of Ursula (La sorella di Ursula) is a 1978 giallo which has all necessary ingredients (including a black-gloved killer) but of course having the right ingredients isn’t always enough. It was written and directed by Enzo Milioni. The movie establishes its exploitation credentials pretty quickly, with entirely gratuitous female frontal nudity within the first few minutes. There’ll be lots more of that as the movie progresses. The fact … [Read More...]

Gwendoline (1984), Blu-Ray review

Just Jaeckin’s Gwendoline is a kinky sexy adventure romp, inspired by the fetish comic strips of John Willie. The movie has a comic book feel. It was destined to be a cult movie from the start. Only a cult audience could appreciate such quirkiness.Jaeckin had made Emmanuelle and The Story of O in the 70s, two of the best-known erotic movies of all time. When he directed Emmanuelle Jaeckin was already a very very successful photographer. He had … [Read More...]
