The Eurocrypt Of Christopher Lee: Collection 2 On Blu-ray From Severin Films This Coming July 26

The iconic Christopher Lee, who was arguably one of the great screen vampires of all time, a Bond villain, a Star Warsvillain and Saruman in The Lord of the Rings trilogy, was way more than just these high-profile performances. Through his upbringing, he spoke Italian, German and French fluently … he served throughout World War II and then abandoned everything he knew, career, position, etc., to follow a career in acting beginning in the immediate post-war period (and even then, most who knew him said he was too tall at six-foot, five-inches to be more than a footnote). Severin Films, with sales and distribution support provided by MVD Entertainment Group, announced this past week that another collection of his “foreign” film productions (remember, … [Read More...]

Bridger (with Michael Ironside in season three), featuring the entire 57-episode run of the series will be available as a ten-disc Blu-ray collection. Blue Underground, with sales and distribution expertise provided by MVD Entertainment Group, has set long-lead, return-to-market street dates for two of its previously released Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack film restoration presentations. Aug. 23 will be the release date for both stand-alone DVD and stand-alone Blu-ray editions of director Lee Frost’s 1969 sexploitation, women in prison (Nazi-sexploitation) flick, Love Camp 7 (originally, Jan. 2017) and director Ferdinando Baldi’s 1975 Spaghetti Western, Get Mean (originally, Oct. 2015). Love Camp 7, which was a new 4K film restoration from an unearthed camera negative, includes the featurette titled “Nazithon: Decadence and Destruction.” Get Mean, was a 2K film restoration from the original camera negative and it comes loaded with extras, including commentary from its star, Tony Anthony … [Read More...]

AGFA Tabs June 28 For The Blu-ray Release Of The Films Of Doris Wishman: The Twilight Years

The American Genre Film Archive (AGFA) has a dream collection for deep-dive film buffs ready for viewing as a three-disc Blu-ray collection on June 28. This would be The Films of Doris Wishman: The Twilight Years, which contains seven film treasures that were produced during the 1970s, often with her using pseudonyms to disguise the fact that the particular film in question — often sexploitation or erotic in nature — was written and directed by a woman. What gems does AGFA have in this collection, which are all 2K film restorations from the 35mm camera negatives (yes, Wishman shot her material not on 16mm or even video, but 35mm film). In chronological order, we begin with the 1970 serial killer shocker, The Amazing Transplant, where Arthur … [Read More...]

Mill Creek Entertainment Tabs May 31 As The Street Date For The DVD Debut Of Writer/Director Peter Hsish’s Drive All Night

Mill Creek Entertainment, in association with Mutiny Pictures, has tabbed May 31 as the street date for writer/director Peter Hsish’s surreal thriller, Drive All Night. This Bay-area all-night puzzle is a neo-noir blend of elements of Scorsese’s Taxi Driver with Michael Mann’s Collateral and generously laced with the sensibility of a David Lynch. If that hits the sweet-spot for your must-see type of film, then Mill Creek’s pick-up of this Cinequest Film Festival surprise should be right up your viewing alley. Dave (played by Yutaka Takeuchi — Battleship, Tales from the Dead) is a late-night taxi driver. He likes the hours, he likes the pace, it is almost a Zen experience for him. But on this night, the driving “bliss” … [Read More...]

Arrow Video Has New 2K Film Restoration Of Writer/Director Douglas Grossman’s Hell High Ready For Blu-ray On July 19

Arrow Video, with domestic sales and distribution expertise provided by MVD Entertainment Group, has circled July 19 on the summer release calendar for a new 2K film restoration (from the original camera negative and supervised by cinematographer Steven Fierberg) of writer/director Douglas Grossman’s 1989 horror film, Hell High. During the film’s production, in the Westchester, New York area (just north of White Plains), in 1986, Grossman had several working titles before finally settling on Hell High. Shortly after the film was completed, Christopher Stryker, who plays Dickens, succumbed to AIDS … the film remained uncirculated for two full years before indie distributor JGM Enterprises (Puppet Master, The Lost Empire, Shadowzone) picked it up for a limited (regional) theatrical release in May of 1989 … Prism followed with a VHS release … [Read More...]

MVD Entertainment Group Bestows "Rewind Collection" Status On Director George Armitage’s July 05 Blu-ray Launch

MVD Entertainment Group announced this past week that a new entry to the company’s popular promotional line of Blu-ray releases, “MVD Rewind Collection,” will be getting a new member on July 05. This will be director George Armitage’s 1990 film release of Miami Blues. How about this for irony. Fred Ward, who got steady work after Silkwood, The Right Stuff and Swing Shift, decided to take a little control over the direction of his acting career by optioning Charles Willeford’s 1984 novel, “Miami Blues.” He loved the character of Junior Frenger and he figured that if he had the rights to the book it would be just a matter of putting the deal together to play the character in the film production. Smart. Since Ward had worked … [Read More...]

Luis Buñuel’s Belle de Jour (1967)

Belle de Jour (1967) is Luis Buñuel's most famous movie and his biggest commercial hit. It's a fascinating exercise in surrealism and eroticism and it's a movie that is perplexing and challenging, but in a good way. You think you have it all figured out then you watch it a second time and you change your mind completely. An art film that is also utterly entralling.Catherine Deneuve gives her career-best performance. You can find my full review … [Read More...]

The Sister of Ursula (1978)

The Sister of Ursula (La sorella di Ursula) is a 1978 giallo which has all necessary ingredients (including a black-gloved killer) but of course having the right ingredients isn’t always enough. It was written and directed by Enzo Milioni. The movie establishes its exploitation credentials pretty quickly, with entirely gratuitous female frontal nudity within the first few minutes. There’ll be lots more of that as the movie progresses. The fact … [Read More...]

Gwendoline (1984), Blu-Ray review

Just Jaeckin’s Gwendoline is a kinky sexy adventure romp, inspired by the fetish comic strips of John Willie. The movie has a comic book feel. It was destined to be a cult movie from the start. Only a cult audience could appreciate such quirkiness.Jaeckin had made Emmanuelle and The Story of O in the 70s, two of the best-known erotic movies of all time. When he directed Emmanuelle Jaeckin was already a very very successful photographer. He had … [Read More...]
