My Hero Academia: World Heroes’ Mission Review: Full of Action

From the very first scene, it’s clear that My Hero Academia: World Heroes’ Mission has set the stakes ridiculously high. A terrorist organization called Humarise has created a chemical weapon that sends people’s quirks into overdrive, and the first city they use it on is completely destroyed: everyone with quirks dead, and only the “chosen” quirkless remain. Unlike the last two films, World Heroes’ Mission doesn’t waste any time jumping into action as the students of class 1-A and pro heroes are sent around the world to strike Humarise. It’s also pretty clear from the jump that this film’s animation style is slightly different, with a bigger emphasis on exaggerated expressions for characters and action scenes. The animation definitely isn’t worse, per se, but there’s a visible … [Read More...]

Demon Slayer Mugen Train Arc Episode 2 – Deep Sleep Review

The second episode of Demon Slayer’s Mugen Train Arc kicks things right into the events of the film, as Tanjiro and the others meet the Kyojuro Rengoku, the Flame Hashira. With that in mind, almost the entire episode is a retread of the film but its overall quality still holds up, and the way the episode is cut makes total sense. The added context of the first episode also helps put a better perspective on the events that start unfolding on the train.  RELATED: Demon Slayer Mugen Train Arc Episode 1 – Flame Hashira Kyojuro Rengoku Review One thing that absolutely jumped out during this episode, however, is that it seems like Ufotable has touched up the fantastic animation of the film even more. Demon Slayer Mugen Train Arc Episode 1 – Flame Hashira Kyojuro Rengoku Review

Demon Slayer’s Mugen Train film was universally loved by fans and critics alike, and the Demon Slayer anime is attempting to tackle that story again with a retelling before the premiere of Season 2. The first episode of the Demon Slayer Mugen Train Arc is interesting, however, as it represents an entirely new addition to the story, not even featured in the original manga.  “Flame Hashira Kyojuro Rengoku” takes place shortly before the events of Mugen Train, and serves as a prologue of sorts to the movie, showing how Rengoku found out about the train itself. As a blazing orange sun dawns Rengoku is sitting in a noodle shop, and it’s here that Demon Slayer’s unparalleled animation is once again put on display. Even something so simple as … [Read More...]

Luis Buñuel’s Belle de Jour (1967)

Belle de Jour (1967) is Luis Buñuel's most famous movie and his biggest commercial hit. It's a fascinating exercise in surrealism and eroticism and it's a movie that is perplexing and challenging, but in a good way. You think you have it all figured out then you watch it a second time and you change your mind completely. An art film that is also utterly entralling.Catherine Deneuve gives her career-best performance. You can find my full review … [Read More...]

The Sister of Ursula (1978)

The Sister of Ursula (La sorella di Ursula) is a 1978 giallo which has all necessary ingredients (including a black-gloved killer) but of course having the right ingredients isn’t always enough. It was written and directed by Enzo Milioni. The movie establishes its exploitation credentials pretty quickly, with entirely gratuitous female frontal nudity within the first few minutes. There’ll be lots more of that as the movie progresses. The fact … [Read More...]

Gwendoline (1984), Blu-Ray review

Just Jaeckin’s Gwendoline is a kinky sexy adventure romp, inspired by the fetish comic strips of John Willie. The movie has a comic book feel. It was destined to be a cult movie from the start. Only a cult audience could appreciate such quirkiness.Jaeckin had made Emmanuelle and The Story of O in the 70s, two of the best-known erotic movies of all time. When he directed Emmanuelle Jaeckin was already a very very successful photographer. He had … [Read More...]
