Alex Garland’s ‘Men’ Is A Provocative But Failed Experiment In Psychological Horror

A24 Alex Garland is an author turned writer (author of The Beach, screenwriter of Sunshine, 28 Days Later, and Dredd) turned director of brainy-yet-visceral sci-fi like Ex Machina and Annihilation. In his latest, Men, a horror-sci-fi whatsit starring Jessie Buckley opening this weekend, Garland’s talent is as palpable as ever, but his inspiration feels a little thin. Buckley, who has a nice career going after memorable roles in Taboo, Chernobyl, Fargo, I’m Thinking Of Ending Things, and The Lost Daughter (the latter earning her BAFTA and Oscar nominations), plays Harper, a recent widow who has rented a house in the English countryside to try to forget her troubles back in London. Those troubles, we learn through a series of flashbacks, mostly… [Read More...]

The Rundown: The Final Season Of ‘Better Call Saul’ Is Giving The People What They Want (Cute Doggies)

AMC The Rundown is a weekly column that highlights some of the biggest, weirdest, and most notable events of the week in entertainment. The number of items could vary, as could the subject matter. It will not always make a ton of sense. Some items might not even be about entertainment, to be honest, or from this week. The important thing is that it’s Friday, and we are here to have some fun. ITEM NUMBER ONE — More shows should just plop cute little dogs into the action Are you guys watching Better Call Saul? I hope so. It’s such a good show and it’s screaming toward the series finale that will smash it into the beginning of Breaking Bad and it’s all fun and exciting and… [Read More...]

Top Chef Houston Power Rankings, Week 12: Reel Big Fish

NBC-Universal Any week I get to use a ska-related headline pun is a great week for yours truly (PICKITUP PICKITUP PICKITUP…). And this week on Top Chef Houston, we were down to just five chefs (…again!). It’s the fiiiiinal chef doooooowwwwn. For this most-crucial-of-episodes-so-far challenge, Tom Colicchio tossed the chefs some Dramamine and told them to get their asses to the docks. They’d be tossing aside the usual Quickfire Challenge like an undersized flounder and taking to the high seas instead, where the chefs would literally fish for their suppers, eat what they catch, teach a man to fish, and other turns of phrase. They went fishing, you get it. In honor of the occasion… [Read More...]

Amy Adams Is Coming For Her Oscar In Marielle Heller’s ‘Nightbitch’

Getty Image Six-time Oscar nominee Amy Adams is coming for her little gold guy in a film aptly titled Nightbitch, which is exactly what I’ve turned into as a result of Amy Adams never winning an Oscar. Deadline reports that Searchlight Pictures has secured the rights to distribute Nightbitch from Annapurna. The dark comedy/horror film is based on Rachel Yoder’s acclaimed debut novel of the same name. Amy Adams is set to star in Nightbitch with Marielle Heller (The Diary of a Teenage Girl, Can You Ever Forgive Me?, A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood) directing. Heller, who directed Oscar-nominated performances from Melissa McCarthy, Richard E. Grant, and Tom Hanks, also wrote the adapted screenplay. Per Deadline, “Nightbitch tells the story… [Read More...]

‘Star Wars’ Probably Won’t Have New Actors Play Old Characters Again

lucasfilm Solo: A Star Wars Story is by far the lowest grossing Star Wars movie. The anthology film, starring Alden Ehrenreich as Han Solo, Donald Glover as Lando Calrissian, and Chewbacca as Chewbacca, made only (“only”) $392 million at the box office, compared to $1.056 billion for Rogue One; it earned less than 1983’s Return of the Jedi, even before adjusting for inflation. Solo also received indifferent-at-best reviews with a 69 percent “Fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes, although the film does have its supporters. There’s a fun Star Wars movie in there, but a troubled production (and maybe the worst scene in the entire franchise) did Solo no favors. The underwhelming response to Solo changed the course of Star Wars, both… [Read More...]

Everybody Clap Your Hands To The Charming ‘Cha Cha Real Smooth’ Trailer With Dakota Johnson

“Cha Cha Slide” is a staple of awkward middle school dances, and has been on the playlist for every bar and bat mitzvah I’ve ever attended (and as a Jew from New York, I’ve attended many). The DJ Casper song also inspired the title of Cha Cha Real Smooth, writer and director Cooper Raiff’s follow-up to the well-received Sh*thouse. Cha Cha Real Smooth is about an aimless recent college graduate (played by Raiff) who connects with a mother (Dakota Johnson) and her daughter (Vanessa Burghardt) while working as a bar/bat mitzvah party host. The plot may sound like it was “designed by an advanced AI to be the most Sundance dramedy plot ever conceived,” as our Vince Mancini … [Read More...]

Kim Kardashian’s Lock Of Marilyn Monroe’s Hair Might Not Actually Be Marilyn Monroe’s Hair

Getty Image This August is the 60th anniversary of Marilyn Monroe’s death, but fascination remains high in the Golden Age of Hollywood actress. Ana de Armas will play her in a biopic that director Andrew Dominik called the “NC-17 version of the Marilyn Monroe story” (he also compared Blonde to if “Citizen Kane and Raging Bull had a baby daughter,” whatever that means), while Kim Kardashian walked the Met Gala red carpet in the same dress that Monroe wore when she seductively sang “Happy Birthday” to President John F. Kennedy in 1962. Kardashian was also gifted a lock of the Some Like It Hot star’s hair by kitsch emporium Ripley’s Believe It or Not — except it might not be Monroe’s… [Read More...]

‘Surgery Is The New Sex’ In The Eerie ‘Crimes Of The Future’ Trailer With Kristen Stewart

In case you were wondering if David Cronenberg still has “it” (“it” being defined as “weird as hell body-horror movies”), the trailer for Crimes of the Future begins with Viggo Mortensen commenting on Léa Seydoux looking at his organs. Later, Kristen Stewart says that “surgery is the new sex,” Seydoux slices open a guy’s chest and licks the wound, and there’s also a dancer covered in stitches and ears on his forehead. So, yeah, I think David Cronenberg still has “it”. “It’s set in a world where people have evolved to a point where we don’t feel physical pain,” Stewart told Screen Daily about Crimes of the Future. “Sex has changed quite a bit, and the … [Read More...]

‘Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness’ Is A Poor Man’s ‘Everything Everywhere All At Once’

Disney/A24/Ralph Ordaz It’s a shame for Doctor Strange 2 (aka Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, directed by Sam Raimi) that it’s opening while Everything Everywhere All At Once is still in theaters. Perhaps never before have we had such a stark illustration of the difference between what happens when a filmmaker-driven movie plays with an idea vs. what happens when a massive IP-driven corporate entity-produced franchise movie plays with that same idea. The idea, in both cases, is the multiverse; the idea that the universe consists not just of our present, visible reality, but infinite, slightly distinct realities running in parallel. What might happen when a character or characters travel between those parallel dimensions through a plot conceit? (Shoutout… [Read More...]

Daniel Radcliffe Is A Ripped, Hard-Partying ‘Weird Al’ In The ‘Weird: The Al Yankovic Story’ Teaser Trailer

You would have to (dare to be) stupid to not be excited for Weird: The Al Yankovic Story, the “Weird Al” Yankovic bio-comedy starring Daniel Radcliffe as the spoof-master supreme. “Wearing the Hawaiian shirt is a huge responsibility that I don’t take lightly,” the Harry Potter actor (who had the only good take about the Slap) said about the Roku Channel movie. “I’m honored to finally share with the world the absolutely 100-percent unassailably true story of Weird Al’s depraved and scandalous life.” In the teaser trailer above, Radcliffe is a ripped, hard-drinking Yankovic, who in real life doesn’t drink and has never done drugs. “I’ve been around people that smoked dope, pot, Mary Jane, reefer. I enjoyed being … [Read More...]

Florence Pugh And Harry Styles Make Sweet (And Not So Sweet) Love In The ‘Don’t Worry Darling’ Trailer

There’s a lot of real-life intrigue about Don’t Worry Darling, the movie that brought together director Olivia Wilde and star Harry Styles — not to mention everything that happened at CinemaCon. But don’t let that overshadow the film itself. It looks really good. In the 1950s-set psychological thriller, Jack (Styles) and Alice (the great Florence Pugh) seemingly live a perfect life, but there’s something else going on. There’s a top-secret Victory Project; an overly cheery CEO (Chris Pine); menacing dinner parties; smashed mirrors; and car chases. “Everyone is acting like I’m crazy,” a skeptical Alice wonders in the trailer above, and “I’m not crazy.” Here’s more from the official plot synopsis: While … [Read More...]

Drew Barrymore Has ‘Deeply’ Apologized For Her Remarks About Johnny Depp And Amber Heard’s Trial

Drew Barrymore on Instagram Drew Barrymore has apologized for her remarks about the Johnny Depp and Amber Heard trial after receiving backlash from an unspecified group of fans. During a recent episode of her daytime talk show, Barrymore made light of the $50 million lawsuit Depp has filed against Heard, and the Pirates of the Caribbean star’s trial against Heard is now being televised for all to see. “It’s like one layer of crazy, it’s a seven-layer dip of insanity. I know that these are two people’s real lives and I know what it’s like to have your life put out in public,” Barrymore previously said on her show, according to Variety. “I understand all the feelings, but they are actually offering… [Read More...]

Bill Murray Opened Up About The Accusation That Led To His Latest Movie Shutting Down

Getty Image Two weeks ago, production on Being Mortal, which is (or perhaps was) to be the feature film directorial debut of Aziz Ansari, was put on hold after a “complaint.” It was later revealed that the complaint involved one of its stars, Bill Murray. Details still haven’t been made public; all that’s reported is it involved “inappropriate behavior.” Nearly two weeks later, the legendary actor has opened up about what happened — while still keeping things close to the vest. CNBC caught up with Murray, who could only say that the complaint involved a “difference of opinion.” He didn’t go into specifics, but he did say, “I did something I thought was funny and it wasn’t taken that way.” Murray didn’t reveal… [Read More...]

Olivia Wilde Was Served Custody Papers From Jason Sudeikis While On Stage Presenting Her New Film At CinemaCon

Getty Image On Tuesday night, Olivia Wilde had a big night. She presented the first trailer for Don’t Worry Darling, her directorial follow-up to the much-loved Booksmart, at CinemaCon in Las Vegas, where Avatar 2 also shared its first trailer. Word of its super-sexy trailer — in an age when mainstream cinema is largely sexless, Ben Affleck-Ana de Armas movies aside — proceeded to break the internet, even though only those in attendance saw its risqué images. But something strange happened while Wilde was on-stage: Someone approached the front rows and slid a mysterious manilla envelope onto the stage. “This is for me?” Wilde asked innocently, then proceeded to retrieve, open it, then go right back to her presentation. Now we know… [Read More...]

The Director Of The Tom Cruise Version Of ‘The Mummy’ Called It ‘The Biggest Failure Of My Life’

Universal Real heads remember the “Dark Universe.” It was supposed to be Universal’s version of the MCU or the DCEU, but populated with the studio’s classic monsters from the ‘30s and ‘40s. Johnny Depp was supposed to play the Invisible Man. Javier Bardem would take on the creature from Frankenstein (with Angelina Jolie courted to play his Bride). Russell Crowe got in one appearance as Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde in the only movie that resulted from his ambitious -verse: 2017’s The Mummy, starring Tom Cruise. Alas, the movie tanked so hard it killed the series dead right out of the gate. Now the film’s director is opening up about it. As per The Hollywood Reporter, Alex Kurtzman — a longtime franchise film screenwriter… [Read More...]

We Attempted Stephen King’s Bizarre Recipe For Microwaved Salmon

Vince Mancini One of my favorite phenomena of being extremely online is when a celebrity or politician gets dragged for a bad food share. Sometimes it’s a gross picture, other times it’s merely giving voice to an odd habit. This week’s main character was, of all people, the master of pulp horror novels, Stephen King. King, who does have a charmingly idiosyncratic Twitter persona, shared this extremely weird recipe for salmon unprompted: Dinner: Get a nice salmon filet at the supermarket, not too big.Put some olive oil and lemon juice on it.Wrap it in damp paper towels.Nuke it in the microwave for 3 minutes or so.Eat it.Maybe add a salad. — Stephen King (@StephenKing) April 20, 2022 And they said he couldn&#… [Read More...]

Nic Cage Shines As Nic Cage In ‘The Unbearable Weight Of Massive Talent,’ An Inspired Riff On Cage-As-Human Meme

Lionsgate In an age when movie trailers are rarely big news, the trailer for The Unbearable Weight Of Massive Talent seemed like big news. The conceit of Nicolas Cage playing Nicolas Cage, in a movie about the weirdo movie star, Nicolas Cage, had the feeling of a meme becoming self-aware. Naturally, the internet went crazy for it. But as Snakes On A Plane once proved, a hit trailer doesn’t always make for a hit movie. In fact, it’s not even the first time this sort of thing has been attempted (JCVD, anyone?). Frankly, I was wary of the entire concept. I have mixed feelings about Nic Cage being a human meme. I started writing FilmDrunk back in 2007, when Nic Cage always seemed to… [Read More...]

Luis Buñuel’s Belle de Jour (1967)

Belle de Jour (1967) is Luis Buñuel's most famous movie and his biggest commercial hit. It's a fascinating exercise in surrealism and eroticism and it's a movie that is perplexing and challenging, but in a good way. You think you have it all figured out then you watch it a second time and you change your mind completely. An art film that is also utterly entralling.Catherine Deneuve gives her career-best performance. You can find my full review … [Read More...]

The Sister of Ursula (1978)

The Sister of Ursula (La sorella di Ursula) is a 1978 giallo which has all necessary ingredients (including a black-gloved killer) but of course having the right ingredients isn’t always enough. It was written and directed by Enzo Milioni. The movie establishes its exploitation credentials pretty quickly, with entirely gratuitous female frontal nudity within the first few minutes. There’ll be lots more of that as the movie progresses. The fact … [Read More...]

Gwendoline (1984), Blu-Ray review

Just Jaeckin’s Gwendoline is a kinky sexy adventure romp, inspired by the fetish comic strips of John Willie. The movie has a comic book feel. It was destined to be a cult movie from the start. Only a cult audience could appreciate such quirkiness.Jaeckin had made Emmanuelle and The Story of O in the 70s, two of the best-known erotic movies of all time. When he directed Emmanuelle Jaeckin was already a very very successful photographer. He had … [Read More...]

Every cult movie fan has of course seen the movie but if you haven't checked out the comics you're missing out on a treat.Barbarella was created by Jean-Claude Forest and the first Barbarella comic appeared in 1962. The comics are witty, clever, stylish and good-natured. And very sexy. And at least the first two are available in English translations. My review can be found here. Read entire … [Read More...]
