Dark City Filmmaker Alex Proyas Is ‘Returning To His Roots’ With Sister Darkness

Alex Proyas has been MIA from the feature film scene since 2016’s “Gods of Egypt,” which fizzled at the box office despite its large scale and impressive cast, and that’s not great. Proyas has turned in masterpieces and head-scratchers over the last 30 years, but one thing is always consistent with his work: he swings for the fences. That guy is not afraid to go big, go weird, and hope that the audience follows along. All you have to do is look at his filmography and you’ll see that thread time and again. Starting with “The Crow,” his fantastic follow-up “Dark City,” “I, Robot,” and the absolutely bonkers Nicolas Cage film “Knowing,” Proyas has always prioritized the odd and unusual in … [Read More...]

The Mummy Inspired Daniel Radcliffe To Take On His The Lost City Role

Aaron and Adam Nee’s “The Lost City” recently made an unexpectedly large splash in theaters, earning over $170 million worldwide and generally pleasing critics. The film is about a romance author (Sandra Bullock) who only turned to writing archeology-themed smut when her interest and skill in genuine archeology was stymied by the death of her husband. Daniel Radcliffe plays a spoiled billionaire named Abigail Fairfax who understands that Bullock has written actual archeological clues into her novels kidnaps her to find a real-life treasure on a remote tropical island before the island’s volcano erupts. Fairfax is depicted as violent, sociopathic, impetuous, entitled, slightly mad, and actually pretty hilarious. Radcliffe has had a long and interesting career, starting out as the child star of a notable … [Read More...]

The Rundown: The Final Season Of ‘Better Call Saul’ Is Giving The People What They Want (Cute Doggies)

AMC The Rundown is a weekly column that highlights some of the biggest, weirdest, and most notable events of the week in entertainment. The number of items could vary, as could the subject matter. It will not always make a ton of sense. Some items might not even be about entertainment, to be honest, or from this week. The important thing is that it’s Friday, and we are here to have some fun. ITEM NUMBER ONE — More shows should just plop cute little dogs into the action Are you guys watching Better Call Saul? I hope so. Netflix Is Expanding Its Subtitling And Audio Description Options For Disabled Viewers

In honor of Global Accessibility Awareness Day, Netflix is boosting its accessibility features, including audio descriptions (AD) and subtitles for deaf and hard of hearing (SDH) people. As someone who developed tinnitus pretty young (who knows why, but also it was probably from concerts), I live in an all subtitles all of the time state of mind, but anything Netflix can do to make their content more accessible is not only worth it, it’s vital. While you could easily argue that Netflix has dropped the ball recently with the news that they’re cracking down on password sharing, possibly implementing ads, and spending ungodly amounts of money, it’s hard to see a downside to this. The biggest changes include expanding the number of titles with ADs and SDHs … [Read More...]

Adam Sandler’s Commencement Speech Is A Must-Watch For Martin Scorsese Fans (And Everyone, Really)

Universal Pictures Adam Sandler completed 12 grades of school in less than six months. The man is an expert at education, which is why the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University asked him to deliver a commencement speech to graduating seniors. (I guess there’s no hard feelings to the NYU professor who told him to quit acting.) Sandler dedicated a portion of his speech to the parents in the crowd, including none other than Martin Scorsese (the legendary Oscar-winning director, who earned his bachelor’s from the university in 1964 and master’s in 1968, is very involved with NYU). “Parents, listen to me. You guys really messed up,” the Uncut Gems star said. “You might be supporting these kids for… [Read More...]

One Of The Kids From ‘Jaws’ Just Became Police Chief In Martha’s Vineyard

Getty Image In 1974, Jonathan Searle created mass panic when he and his brother pranked the beach-happy folks of Amity with a cardboard fin. Searle was a child actor with a notable role in Jaws, as the merry prankster pointing at his brother and frantically crying, “He made me do it!” as tons of local cops swarmed them following their hoax. Now 56, he’s taking on the Brody role for real in the same town where the movie was filmed. Searle has been named the Chief of Police for Oak Bluffs, a section of Martha’s Vineyard. “I’m finding the whole thing quite funny myself!” Searle said, although apparently not a single reporter thought to ask him whether he’d close the… [Read More...]

Chris Pratt Stars In The Action-Packed Trailer For Amazon Prime’s ‘The Terminal List’

The point is, this guy loves acting with guns. Now, he gets to do that in his own TV show! The Terminal List is an upcoming Amazon Prime series based on the novel of the same name by Jack Carr. The series follows Pratt as Navy Seal James Reece as he returns from a deadly mission and tries to piece together what exactly happened out there, and why he was the only one to survive. It looks like Disney is hungry for more classic rock and roll documentaries. The Endless Quest for Online Validation in ‘Spree’ & ‘Superhost’ [Double Trouble]

Social media is a cursed necessity of modern life. The hunt for likes, RTs, comments, and shares is never-ending. Most days, it feels as though you’re just circling the drain and waiting for that next dopamine fix. The crushing weight to constantly level-up in the online world is insurmountable and forces users to push their own psychological and emotional limits to get a bigger payback in virtual currency. Eugene Kotlyarenko’s Spree and Brandon Christensen’s Superhost play in extremes, both films delving into the world of online streamers and YouTube content creators. “We’re all kind of sad, pathetic, and desperate regardless of what side of the ideological spectrum we’re on,” commented Kotlyarenko in an interview. He later noted his film as “anti-ideological” in … [Read More...]

‘Star Wars’ Probably Won’t Have New Actors Play Old Characters Again

lucasfilm Solo: A Star Wars Story is by far the lowest grossing Star Wars movie. The anthology film, starring Alden Ehrenreich as Han Solo, Donald Glover as Lando Calrissian, and Chewbacca as Chewbacca, made only (“only”) $392 million at the box office, compared to $1.056 billion for Rogue One; it earned less than 1983’s Return of the Jedi, even before adjusting for inflation. Solo also received indifferent-at-best reviews with a 69 percent “Fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes, although the film does have its supporters. There’s a fun Star Wars movie in there, but a troubled production (and maybe the worst scene in the entire franchise) did Solo no favors. The underwhelming response to Solo changed the course of Star Wars, both… [Read More...]

Firestarter Used A John Carpenter Classic As A Starting Point For Its Score

Hollywood has gone through so many Stephen King films that it’s circling back to remake King movies that have already been adapted for the silver screen (see “It” and also “Pet Sematary”), but can you blame them? The man knows how to craft a terrifying story. The most recent King remake to hit theaters is “Firestarter,” which is helmed this time around by director Keith Thomas (“The Vigil”) and comes from the folks at Universal and Blumhouse. And it’s that magical Blumhouse connection that made the score for the new film a little extra special. In a Bloody Disgusting interview, Thomas shared that he had dreamed of having horror icon John Carpenter compose the score for the film, but he was keeping his hopes low:”It … [Read More...]

Luis Buñuel’s Belle de Jour (1967)

Belle de Jour (1967) is Luis Buñuel's most famous movie and his biggest commercial hit. It's a fascinating exercise in surrealism and eroticism and it's a movie that is perplexing and challenging, but in a good way. You think you have it all figured out then you watch it a second time and you change your mind completely. An art film that is also utterly entralling.Catherine Deneuve gives her career-best performance. You can find my full review … [Read More...]

The Sister of Ursula (1978)

The Sister of Ursula (La sorella di Ursula) is a 1978 giallo which has all necessary ingredients (including a black-gloved killer) but of course having the right ingredients isn’t always enough. It was written and directed by Enzo Milioni. The movie establishes its exploitation credentials pretty quickly, with entirely gratuitous female frontal nudity within the first few minutes. There’ll be lots more of that as the movie progresses. The fact … [Read More...]

Gwendoline (1984), Blu-Ray review

Just Jaeckin’s Gwendoline is a kinky sexy adventure romp, inspired by the fetish comic strips of John Willie. The movie has a comic book feel. It was destined to be a cult movie from the start. Only a cult audience could appreciate such quirkiness.Jaeckin had made Emmanuelle and The Story of O in the 70s, two of the best-known erotic movies of all time. When he directed Emmanuelle Jaeckin was already a very very successful photographer. He had … [Read More...]
