The Many Horrors in 30 Years of the ‘Wolfenstein’ Franchise [Safe Room Podcast]

Where would we be without Wolfenstein? In every genre, there is a game that becomes synonymous with it, and with the first-person shooter space, that game is Wolfenstein 3D. Not only the blueprint for decades of corridor exploring FPS titles but serves as a timeless example of just how malleable the horror genre could be.  In addition to the gratifying experience of slaughtering endless hordes of nazi scum, Wolfenstein’s horror influences have allowed the franchise to continually redefine itself over the years. By emphasizing real-world horrors through equally hellish supernatural or nazi abomination foes, Wolfenstein is a series that seemingly cannot lose steam no matter the era it is being set in.  Who could have ever foreseen Wolfenstein’s evolution from roaming the colorful halls of … [Read More...]

We’ve all played post-apocalyptic games before, but what about something that predates the apocalypse? That’s what French developer Piece of Cake Studios is banking on with their upcoming co-op action title, Crossroads. Crossroads sees evil forces opening up portals that have resulted in supernatural creatures spilling into our world. Fortunately, a secret society of supernatural hunters called the Brotherhood has been training for a day like this, and has now made itself known. [Review] Obliterate Cosmic Horrors in the Stylish Shooter ‘Forgive Me Father’

Having lived through the wave of games that inspired it, the first-person shooter revival represents an exciting time. It’s like having my youth remixed in new and exciting ways. The bare bones of what made shooters great in the 90s and early 2000s with some modern flair? Sign me up again and again. One of the latest variations on a theme is Byte Barrel’s Forgive Me Father, a comic book-styled shooter that’s heavy on Lovecraft, religion, and hyperviolence. It places the player in the shoes of the only remaining sane person in a world besieged by horrors. To face the maddening monsters that populate the world you’re going to need guns, lots of guns…and maybe the odd crucifix. What immediately strikes you about Forgive Me … [Read More...]

‘Dead by Daylight’ Board Game Announced, Smashes Campaign Goal [Trailer]

Everybody was doing it, so why not have a Dead by Daylight board game? And just like what happened with Bloodborne and Resident Evil, the Kickstarter for the Dead by Daylight board game by Level 99 Games has already crushed its goal since it launched early last week. Currently, the game sits at just over $546,000 of its initial $250,000 goal. The game is for 3-5 players, and as you’d expect, pits a Killer against a group of Survivors. The latter must move around the map, repair generators and escape, while the former must hunt down the Survivors to make eight sacrifices in order to claim victory. From initial appearances, Level 99 Games has done quite well in translating the video game into a board game. Players can use … [Read More...]

First revealed last October, developer Soleil and publisher 110 Industries’ upcoming slice-and-dice action game Wanted: Dead has unveiled a new trailer at the SXSW Gaming Awards that doubles down on the bloody dismemberment and gunplay. All set to Bella and the Switchblades’ “The Wild One”, the trailer captures the fun 80s action movie feel with the over-the-top violence we all love. In addition, Soleil has put together another mock video starring Stefanie Joosten as Vivienne Niemantsverdriet, a retired Olympic medalist and former celebrity chef who has joined the ranks of the Manu Militari mercenary unit as a master gunsmith. This latest episode shows just why being a gunsmith is far more appropriate for Vivienne. For those who missed it the first time, Wanted: … [Read More...]

Enhance Your ‘Dying Light 2’ Experience With These Mods for Parkour, Dismemberment and More

Looking to spice up your Dying Light 2 play on PC with some mods? Some of the more recent mods released improve the game’s dismemberment system, improve its parkour mechanics, and even add a Nightmare Plus difficulty mode. Starting things off is ISIKplay’s Improved Dismemberment mod. The modder notes that the “physics and animation” of the zombies has been toned down when compared to the original game. This mod simply increases the chance of zombie limbs flying off when you whack them. While Dying Light 2 touts its parkour mechanics, Mac Daddy’s Realistic Hardcore Parkour Player Physics mod tweaks it further by adding realistic weight and momentum to the game. This in turn makes parkour and combat more challenging, and according to the modder, will not … [Read More...]

Tango Gameworks: ‘Ghostwire: Tokyo’ Originally Started Out as ‘The Evil Within 3′

For you fans of 2017’s The Evil Within 2, you’re probably wondering if there will be a third entry anytime soon. Well, it turns out that Tango Gameworks’ upcoming Bethesda title Ghostwire: Tokyo started out as The Evil Within 3. In a new hands-off demonstration with the upcoming action-adventure horror title, Gamespot reveals that the Tango Gameworks team was in the process of developing The Evil Within 3. However, changes during development caused them to re-evaluate things, ultimately deciding to change directions on the project and creating a new IP. However, there’s still enough of The Evil Within left in Ghostwire: Tokyo for fans to be excitied. For example, the first two games in The Evil Within series featured “morphing, shifting rooms”, which … [Read More...]

‘Resident Evil’ Creator Hopes Rumored ‘Resident Evil 4’ Remake Improves the Writing

While it remains to be seen if (or when) Capcom finally announces the development of the Resident Evil 4 remake, the original game’s creator, Shinji Mikami, hopes that the team improves on what he was able to do with the story. Speaking to VG24/7, Mikami acknowledges that many fans “will most likely want [a remake], and so that’s a good thing.” The director of the 2005 hit does hope that the new team will do a better job on his story, which he claims was written by him in just three weeks. Namely because he “only had three weeks to write it in.” Currently, Mikami is working to get Tango Gameworks’ Ghostwire: Tokyo out the door, which had its release date of March 25 … [Read More...]

John Carpenter Claims ‘Halo Infinite’ to Be Best of the Series

As horror fans know, the master himself, John Carpenter, turns 74 today. And, in case you didn’t know, John Carpenter is also a longtime fan of video games. After all, he lent his likeness to the 2002 video game sequel to The Thing, but has also taken to Twitter from time to time to post his thoughts on the games that he’s been playing. One title earning top praise from Carpenter is 343 Industries’ latest entry in the Halo series with Halo Infinite. Carpenter sent out his thoughts last night about the Xbox shooter, going so far as to say that the game is the series’ best. HALO INFINITE is a fun shooter. Immense beautiful production design. Best of the Halo series. — John Carpenter (@TheHorrorMaster) January 16, 2022 This … [Read More...]

Scream in Your Hands: How To Evolve the Serial Killer Subgenre In Video Games

The release of the new Scream movie has me in the mood to play games where you’re trying to evade a slasher/serial killer. My personal favorites when it comes to this type of mayhem are that of Puppet Combo’s games; in gems like Babysitter Bloodbath and Murder House, you must run for your life as a mad killer tries to hunt you and butcher you. It’s very much in-tune with a slasher gem such as Scream. But though such games give me a rush, there is something more I long for from titles involving serial killers.  For a long time now, I’ve been craving a serial killer narrative with greater depth. Something that doesn’t rely on just thrills, but conveys a story that disturbs and … [Read More...]

Artist Recreates Updated Regina From ‘Dino Crisis’ in Unreal 5

Yeah, we know it sucks that for whatever reason, Capcom still hasn’t budged (as far as we know) on revisiting the Dino Crisis series. With games like Deathground and Instinction on the way, at least fans have spiritual successors to look forward to. But what if Capcom did decide to given Regina and company a new life? One artist has decided to whip up something that could give us a glimpse into what it would look like. Character Designer Mike Wilson (no relation) has posted his take on a modern Regina on his ArtStation, using Epic’s shiny new Unreal Engine 5. Wilson updated Regina to look stylistically as close to Leon, Claire, Jill and Carlos from Capcom’s remakes of Resident Evil 2 and 3, while also maintaining … [Read More...]

[Video] Devolver Digital Teases New ‘Serious Sam’ Game Later This Month

Serious Sam 4 had a rough go, but Devolver Digital isn’t giving up on the series. In fact, we may see a new entry in the series very soon. The publisher took to Twitter on Friday night to tease something frosty. The teaser (which you can see below) was actually featured last month in a tweet by the publisher, and briefly features an Arctic landscape with a typical Serious Sam quip. Last night, however, it was posted again with the question, “What if a new Serious Sam game was being announced next week and released this month?” The official Serious Sam Twitter account retweeted it, adding its own two cents. Ice. Cold. https://t.co/WNzbkb8ajI — Serious Sam (@SeriousSamIAm) January 7, 2022 More info is … [Read More...]

Luis Buñuel’s Belle de Jour (1967)

Belle de Jour (1967) is Luis Buñuel's most famous movie and his biggest commercial hit. It's a fascinating exercise in surrealism and eroticism and it's a movie that is perplexing and challenging, but in a good way. You think you have it all figured out then you watch it a second time and you change your mind completely. An art film that is also utterly entralling.Catherine Deneuve gives her career-best performance. You can find my full review … [Read More...]

The Sister of Ursula (1978)

The Sister of Ursula (La sorella di Ursula) is a 1978 giallo which has all necessary ingredients (including a black-gloved killer) but of course having the right ingredients isn’t always enough. It was written and directed by Enzo Milioni. The movie establishes its exploitation credentials pretty quickly, with entirely gratuitous female frontal nudity within the first few minutes. There’ll be lots more of that as the movie progresses. The fact … [Read More...]

Gwendoline (1984), Blu-Ray review

Just Jaeckin’s Gwendoline is a kinky sexy adventure romp, inspired by the fetish comic strips of John Willie. The movie has a comic book feel. It was destined to be a cult movie from the start. Only a cult audience could appreciate such quirkiness.Jaeckin had made Emmanuelle and The Story of O in the 70s, two of the best-known erotic movies of all time.
